Ventral Hernia Repair Project

Ventral hernias are a significant surgical burden in Ghana, often leading to complications such as bowel obstruction, strangulation, chronic pain, and infections if left untreated. Traditional suture-based repairs have high recurrence rates (up to 40%), increasing the need for a more durable and effective approach.

HealthFlux, in collaboration with Ambe Brown Medical Consultancy, is leading the adoption of sublay mesh repair, a technique proven to reduce recurrence, lower complication rates, and enhance patient recovery. This method strengthens the abdominal wall, minimizing the risk of re-herniation.

Project Phases

Phase 1 (Completed): First training session held, introducing surgeons to sublay hernia repair techniques.

Phase 2 (Ongoing): Surgeons perform at least 10 ventral hernia repairs in their hospitals under mentorship.

Phase 3: Refresher training session with Prof. Ambe, reinforcing techniques and addressing challenges.

Phase 4: Scaling up impact—trained surgeons mentor colleagues in regional hospitals to spread expertise.

This initiative is transforming hernia care in Ghana, ensuring safer, more effective surgical outcomes and sustainable healthcare improvements across the country.
